Michigan has emerged as one of the top states in the nation for online casino and sports betting activity, ranking second in the U.S. for online sports betting revenue, following only New Jersey.

Since the legalization of online gaming in 2019, Michigan has generated over $2.1 billion in revenue. A significant portion of this—around 65%—is directed toward education funding in the state, contributing approximately $48 to $50 million each month.

In January 2025 alone, internet gaming and sports betting operators in Michigan reported a combined total of $331.2 million in gross receipts. Of that sum, $248.2 million came from iGaming activities, while $83 million came from online sports betting. This revenue translated into $46.8 million in taxes and payments made to the state during the same month.

Detroit’s three commercial casinos also contributed to the state’s revenue, generating $12.8 million in city wagering taxes and municipal service fees in January 2025. These funds play a role in supporting local services and infrastructure in the city.

The growth of Michigan’s online wagering industry follows the successful push for legalization led by former Republican state lawmaker Brant Iden, who worked to overcome initial opposition to online gaming legislation. The regulated environment ensures all bets must be placed within state borders, with providers using location tracking technology to enforce compliance. The Michigan Gaming Control Board continues its efforts to shut down unlicensed online casinos and maintain a safe, legal market for residents.

With strong revenues and a robust regulatory framework in place, Michigan continues to solidify its position as a leader in the expanding online gaming industry.
